Marshfield’s 2007/08 season came to a dismal end at a rain sodden Bath University where they lost 2-0 to Claverton Villa on a quagmire of a pitch. Marshfield depleted through absenteeism were unable to even name a substitute but despite that they started well and Russell Lodge was soon peppering the corner flag with a couple of wayward shots! At the other end Scott Windle was having a quiet time, just as well as his goal mouth resembled a small lake. Play was held up twice in the first half while referee Paul Weeks attempted to retrieve the match ball from bramble bushes in a neighbouring field for which he actually
received a round of applause from the players, not often you see or hear that! As you may be able to tell from the report there was little in the first half to excite the small crowd, Marshfield’s only supporter Josh Baker, in fact the only supporter for both teams might have left early had he not been waiting for a lift!

Anyway with the score line goalless at the break and with Marshfield now playing towards the lake and with the tide Josh may well have been optimistic however Claverton’s fitness began to tell and Scottie Windle’s workload began to increase. Eventually the students cored the goal they had threatened and despite Marshfield’s efforts to equalise it was Claverton who scored a second to send Marshfield to their sixth defeat from their last eight games. Mercifully the game ended before the next deluge came, roll on 2008/09.
