Claverton Villa 2 Marshfield 0

Attendance 1

Marshfield’s 2007/08 season came to a dismal end at a rain sodden Bath University where they lost 2-0 to Claverton Villa on a quagmire of a pitch. Marshfield depleted through absenteeism were unable to even name a substitute but despite that they started well and Russell Lodge was soon peppering the corner flag with a couple of wayward shots! At the other end Scott Windle was having a quiet time, just as well as his goal mouth resembled a small lake. Play was held up twice in the first half while referee Paul Weeks attempted to retrieve the match ball from bramble bushes in a neighbouring field for which he actually received a round of applause from the players, not often you see or hear that! As you may be able to tell from the report there was little in the first half to excite the small crowd, Marshfield’s only supporter Josh Baker, in fact the only supporter for both teams might have left early had he not been waiting for a lift!
Anyway with the score line goalless at the break and with Marshfield now playing towards the lake and with the tide Josh may well have been optimistic however Claverton’s fitness began to tell and Scottie Windle’s workload began to increase. Eventually the students scored the goal they had threatened and despite Marshfield’s efforts to equalise it was Claverton who scored a second to send Marshfield to their sixth defeat from their last eight games. Mercifully the game ended before the next deluge came, roll on 2008/09.

Tom Morgan Cup Quarter Final

Marshfield 2

Southdown Rangers 0

Southdown Rangers from Division 2 provided stubborn resistance at the Withymead before Marshfield eventually progressed to the semi finals of the Tom Morgan Cup.

Cheered on by a good number of noisy supporters, Southdown attacked on the break and Scott Windle had to be alert to break up a number of promising moves. At the other end Ian McPherson thought he had scored but the ball was hacked clear from under the cross bar. Andy Jefferies, Bobby Jenkins and Ben Leslie all went close for Marshfield but the half time whistle came with the score line still 0-0.

In the second half Marshfield increased the tempo and were rewarded on the hour mark when Dan Watson’s through ball found Andy Jefferies and he controlled the ball with one touch before lobbing keeper Chris Mann for the opener. Southdown immediately brought on Stuart Mitchell for Wes Hedges but it was Andy Jefferies who nearly added a second for Marshfield heading Jac Jones’s cross narrowly over the bar.

The visitor’s were now throwing caution to the wind and Mitchell was unlucky to see his curling shot come back off the bar. Adrian White was next to try his luck having three attempts at goal in one attack, his first effort was parried by Scott Windle, his second was cleared off the line by Pete Latham and his third sailed just over the bar.

Shane Andrews was barking instructions at his defence but it didn’t stop Southdown searching for an equaliser and Scott Windle saved well palming another effort away for a corner.

Jac Jones hobbled off to be replaced by Emile Wratten and Marshfield welcomed back Russell Lodge for his first game since November. Luke Lock and Bobby Jenkins were combining well to cause problems down the left but it was a corner from the right on 89 minutes which eventually killed off the spirited Southdown challenge. Bobby Jenkins rose highest to head Dan Watson’s corner kick goalwards and Paul King was on hand to smash the ball home from close range.

League Division 1

Jazz Sports 0

Marshfield 2

Marshfield completed the double over Jazz Sports with a hard earned victory at a rain soaked Odd Down Playing Fields. Marshfield gave debuts to Jack Jones on the left and Pete Latham at the centre of defence and both impressed. Jones was unfortunate not to give the visitor’s the lead midway through the half when he was thwarted by Jazz keeper Tom Hulbert. Minutes later the Jazz stopper was again in action saving a close range effort from Bobby Jenkins but with the half running out Marshfield eventually broke the deadlock when Bobby Jenkins rose highest to head home Ben Leslie’s corner.

Marshfield’s second goal came on 48 minutes, Jack Jones collected the ball deep in his own half, he made ground and released Bobby Jenkins on the left. Jenk’s made the corner, checked back and sent a cross to the far post where Andy Jefferies headed back across goal to Paul King who steered the ball home at the back post. Minutes later, Kinger had the ball in the net again heading home a Shane Andrews cross only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

The rest of the half will be remembered for Chairman Mike Phillpott tumbling over the water bottles on the line and then appealing for a foul but the referee ignored his claims, no change there then!

Marshfield 4 Claverton Villa 3

Lowly Claverton Villa pushed Marshfield all the way in this Division 1 encounter and will count themselves unlucky to come away without a point. After the teams had observed a minute’s silence for the “Day of Remembrance” Marshfield kicked off and were soon ahead. A strong run by Bobby Jenkins earned the home side a corner and from the resulting cross from Ross Andrews, Russell Lodge headed into the corner unchallenged. After fifteen minutes and with the sound of Marshfield Band playing in the distance, a rainbow appeared over the ground and there was even an accompanying “crock of gold”. Russell Lodge was the crock hobbling off to be replaced by old “Golden Balls” Mike Phillpott. Meanwhile as the rainbow faded so did Marshfield’s dominance and Claverton
Villa began to stretch the home defence and Scott Windle was called into action more than once to make smart saves. Five minutes before the interval Windle was eventually beaten when Jack Boddy found space on the edge of the area to steer the ball into the corner of the net.

Five minutes into the second half and Claverton rocked Marshfield by taking the lead, Ben Young the scorer but this only served as a “shot in the arm” to the home side who replied with three goals in twelve minutes. First Bobby Jenkins latched onto a Ross Andrews pass and finished superbly steering the ball inside the far post past keeper Lee Jones. Minutes later and Jenkins was on the mark again following good work on the left from Luke Lock. The next was the goal of the game when Emile Wratten’s pass was chested into the path of Paul King by Bobby Jenkins and King’s volley left Jones helpless. Claverton should have been dead at this stage but with twenty minutes remaining Martin Williams headed home from an acute angle to make it 4-3. Claverton continued to press for an equaliser and hit the woodwork twice in the dying minutes but it was Marshfield who held on for the three points.

Sunday 16th September, 2007 Somerset Cup 1st Round.

Marshfield 4 Woodspring XI FC 3 (after extra time)

In this Somerset Cup 1st Round match Marshfield won a bad tempered affair against Woodspring following an extra time goal from Shane Andrews. An even first half saw the visitors take an early lead when Levi Marlow rose highest to head home following a free kick on the left. Marshfield equalised with a stunning 30 yard effort from Andy Jefferies. Bobby Jenkins was clattered midway into the visitors half but the ball fell kindly to Jefferies who chested the ball down and lashed an unstoppable volley over keeper Dancey. After 28 minutes Woodspring were in front again when Marlow scored his second but Marshfield were level again before the break when Bobby Jenkins squeezed home a shot at the far post.

After the interval Marshfield poured forward and Shane Andrews gave the home side what looked to be a winning lead midway through the second half. Best was then given a red card for the visitors after referee Dave Davis had seen the worst of his game but Levi Marlow was still causing problems at the other end and he scored his hat-trick ten minutes from time rising high at the far post to head home and send the match into extra time.

Marshfield continued to create chances but it was man of the match Shane Andrews who scored the decider after seven minutes of extra time. The visitors from Weston Super Mare battled to save the game and keeper Scott Windle was led from the field with a bloody face following a melee after a corner but before substitute keeper Jefferies had time to make a save referee blew the whistle and the home side were through to the next round.

Marshfield 4

GT Sports 0

Manager Ken Tierney was delighted as Marshfield comfortably beat GT Sports 4-0 in their first home game of the season. Marshfield nearly had a dream start when a loose clearance fell to Ben Leslie 35 yards out but his shot hit the top of the bar with keeper Paul Anthony stranded. Sports defence was overworked at this stage and it was no surprise when the home side took the lead after sixteen minutes. A Ben Leslie corner on the right was headed back across goal by Bobby Jenkins and Andy Jefferies was on hand to gleefully swivel and smash the ball home from close range. Marshfield continued to dominate and added a second when Nick Davis
released Dan Watson just inside the GT half and he ran unchallenged towards the area before steering a shot past Anthony. Before the break GT suffered a further setback when Ben Horan was given a straight red for elbowing Nick Davis.

After the interval Sports battled to keep a foothold in the game but fell further behind on the hour mark. Bobby Jenkins released Nick Davis on the left and he outsprinted Mark Gregory to steer the ball past the despairing Anthony. Ken Tierney then rang the changes bringing on Tom Brown and Sammy Johnston and it was the latter who caused havoc on the right before being brought down in the area by Dave Cooper. Dan Watson scored the resulting penalty to wrap up a well deserved three points for Marshfield.

Larkhall Sunday 2 Marshfield 7

Marshfield’s goal scoring record was under scrutiny tonight having only netted one in their last three matches and for 35 minutes it looked like another struggle with chances going a begging! However after Jac Jones popped up in the box to head the opener the floodgates opened and Davy Jenkins quickly drilled in a second before Lark’s Adam White reduced the arrears from the penalty spot. Bobby Jenkins then rifled in two long range efforts either side of the break before Andy Jefferies grabbed Marshfield’s fifth. The home side pulled another goal back with a solo effort from Goldring before Bobby Jenkins scored twice more to complete the rout.

Tom Morgan Cup Semi Final

Marshfield 1 Kingsmead 2

Two home defeats in a week have left Marshfield’s promising season under threat after this Tom Morgan Cup exit at the semi final stage. Marshfield started well and were ahead after sixteen minutes when Andy Keen headed a cross back towards his own keeper but Jac Jones was first to the ball to head home past the advancing Andy King.

Moments later, with the King’s defence still wobbling, Bobby Jenkins struck a shot narrowly wide of the post. Marshfield were now having their best spell of the game although the possession never quite produced enough goal mouth chances and Kingsmead seemed satisfied to reach the break just the one goal down.

Marshfield almost had the perfect start to the second half when Paul King’s pass just eluded Nick Davis in front of goal but two minutes later it was all square when Nick Tiley’s cross was volleyed home by Michael Gale. It was now Kingsmead’s turn to dominate the game now and Jay Riccio sent in a shot which Scott Windle parried to safety but midway through the second half King’s scored what turned out to be the winner. Shane Andrews brought down Riccio on the edge of the box and Nick Tiley curled the resulting free kick into the corner of the net. (Must ask Stato how many goals we have conceded this season from free kick situations). Anyway Marshfield pressed for an equaliser but to no avail and any thoughts of another trip to Twerton Park disappeared as quickly as the morning snow storm.

Marshfield 0 Manor Park Rangers 2

Couldn’t quite bring myself to write about this setback on Sunday afternoon so I thought I’d watch the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final to take my mind off it!

Trouble is even here I watched a side in black and white striped shirts and black shorts lose 2-0 and unbelievably the goals were also a penalty and an own goal, not quite as bad as Marshfield’s though! There was even a big ugly centre back named Andrews who was man of the match although he was on the winning side.

Anyway let’s get back to Marshfield’s first league defeat of the season and I have to admit the result could be partly blamed on Stato. As Scott Windle had gone over 400 playing minutes without conceding a goal Stato had a quick word before the match to request the record continued. Obviously this cursed Scott as he completely missed his clearing kick from Mad Dog King’s back pass after only fifteen minutes, 1-0. Ten minutes later it was worse when Anthony Dando scored from the penalty spot to make it 2-0. Thankfully my memory is still playing tricks (see footnote) and I can’t remember a great deal more about the match so I’m going back to watch the tv. Would you believe it’s another team in black and white stripes losing, Newcastle away to Spurs, I take it back, the black and whites have scored, the times are a changing!

MARSHFIELD 3 TEAM DBA 0

With the goalless draw from two weeks ago still fresh in the mind, Marshfield made no mistake today in beating bottom of the league DBA 3-0. The home side were ahead after six minutes when Bobby Jenkins worked enough space on the edge of the box to place a shot beyond Peter Gentzel in the Student’s goal. Marshfield were creating a host of chances during this early period and hit the woodwork twice and also the side netting before scoring a second on 18 minutes. A corner was only partially cleared and Paul King smashed a shot from fifteen yards through a ruck of players. Marshfield continued to pile on the pressure with Scott Windle rarely being threatened however on the stroke of halftime the keeper lost his footing when coming to claim a free kick but fortunately for the home side the ball sailed agonisingly wide.

After the break DBA introduced Kelvin Hughes up front in an attempt to get back into the game but it was Marshfield who were looking most likely to score. A bizarre incident happened half way through the second half when Andy Jefferies robbed keeper Gentzel when attempting to clear and steered the ball back towards the empty net. Jefferies turned away to celebrate but the ball rolled up against the post and back to the relieved Gentzel. With six minutes remaining DBA’s Mark Allen tried to pull Ross Andrews shorts off and received a booking for his trouble. After Ross had re-adjusted his kit he sent in a free kick to the far post where Pete Latham side footed home his first goal for the club to secure the points. In the dying minutes Ross then picked up a booking himself while Dave Krook brought a flying save from Windle to secure Marshfield’s third clean sheet in a row.

Team DBA 0 Marshfield 0

Sometimes a match has 0-0 smell about it and after half an hour this one stunk! The students, without a point all season, battled to get a foothold in the game but as the match wore on Marshfield began to exert more and more pressure. Time and time again DBA cleared the ball clear from their penalty area whilst at the other end Marshfield keeper Scott Windle had a quiet day in the sunshine clearing the occasional back pass. Marshfield were guilty without charge of not converting a stack of set pieces, a succession of corners and free kicks were booted away from the home side’s goalmouth. The words Alamo, siege and frustration should be all over this report as Marshfield battered the opposition. In fact I’m so shell socked at this result I thought I would Google the word “frustration” for a definition, there were several but I thought this one was most apt. “The feelings, thoughts and behaviours associated with not achieving a particular goal or the belief that a goal has been prematurely interrupted” that sums it up for me!

Tom Morgan Cup Round Two

MARSHFIELD 5 LARKHALL SUNDAY 0

Oh how Andy Jefferies must love the Tom Morgan Cup, after scoring a hat-trick away at Talbot Wanderers in the last round he followed it up with a four timer here today

The striker netted his first on sixteen minutes when he swept home Ben Leslie’s cross giving keeper James Dixon no chance. Bobby Jenkins was causing chaos on the left and after he had been brought down in the box Dan Watson coolly slotted home the resulting penalty. In between the goals Ross Andrews was replaced by Emile Wratten, Ross limped out of the action with what was described as an ailment however others suggested it was more of an “alement”. Just before the break Ricky Patton’s frustration got the better of him and referee Keith Eddy produced a yellow card following a heavy challenge on Jac Jones.

In the second half it was the “Beard” show, first he latched onto Scott Windles’ massive clearance, just one bounce before Beard lobbed it over the advancing Dixon. His hat trick came on 63 minutes when Pete Latham released Bobby Jenkins on the left and his cross found Jefferies who scored from close range. Bobby Jenkins and Shane Andrews were soon replaced by George Ball and Mike Phillpott but there was still time for the Beard to score his fourth following a cross from Jac Jones. Ian McPherson was next to try his luck first curling a shot around the far post and then the defender went even closer forcing Dixon to hastily punch a fierce shot over the bar. Moments later another flowing Marshfield gave Paul King an opportunity before the Larks defence hastily cleared the ball to safety. In the dying minutes Ricky Patton managed to send a shot over the bar but that was as good as it got for the visitors.

Sunday 27th January, 2008 - Division 1

Marshfield 2 Kingsmead 1

Marshfield gained revenge for their Stan Milsom Cup drubbing back in November when they beat league leaders Kingsmead 2-1 at the Withymead.

The home side made the perfect start to this match when Paul Metheringham scored after only two minutes. Bobby Jenkins was brought down on the left wing and from the resulting free kick Dan Watson floated a cross into the area where Metheringham ghosted in unmarked to head into the corner of the net. Minutes later Kingsmead were unlucky not to equalise when Nick Tiley’s free kick beat both Marshfield’s defensive wall and keeper Scott Windle but the ball came back off the post and was hacked to safety. Meanwhile at the other end Bobby Jenkins delivered a shot which was superbly saved by Callum Davies at the expense of a corner. Kingsmead did equalise on the half hour mark when the home side had two opportunities to clear a corner before the ball fell to Andy Keen who drove the ball home from ten yards. Marshfield regained the lead just before the break following another Dan Watson free kick. This time it was the Kings’ defence who were in trouble and Metheringham found time and space to smack a shot against the underside of the bar and from the rebound Andy Jefferies smashed in the rebound.

After the break both sides tried to gain supremacy but the home defence were not going to relinquish the lead for a second time. Marshfield’s attack couldn’t snatch the killer third goal but their defence held firm and the three points gained took them to top spot at the expense of Kingsmead

Sunday 6th January, 2008 - Tom Morgan Cup

Talbot Wanderers 0 Marshfield 4

After five weeks without a match Marshfield could have been excused for being a little rusty as they struggled to break down a stubborn Talbot defence. While Premiership teams were resting some star names for their FA Cup matches Marshfield manager Ken Tierney was being forced into changes for his Tom Morgan Cup match. Skipper and Nelson landlord Dan Watson together with keeper "Spindle" Windle both found the lure of Craven Cottage to much as they joined the thousands of Bristol Rovers supporters travelling east up the M4 to watch their side draw with Fulham.

Meanwhile down at Keynsham, Marshfield opened brightly and the visitor's attack of Andy Jefferies and debutant Paul Metherington were immediately causing problems for the home defence. Sammy Johnstone was ferreting around in midfield in place of the skipper and the back four were seldom troubled as the half wore on. The breakthrough came on 23 minutes when referee Brian Maynard awarded Marshfield a penalty for hand ball. Andy "Beardie" Jefferies wasted no time in taking over the penalty taking roll in place of the skipper however his spot kick was parried by keeper Dan Marks but Beardie was quick enough to respond and tuck the ball away beyond the despairing keeper. Marshfield continued to press forward and Talbot needed some desperate last ditch defending, clearing from the goal line several times as the game wore on. The visitors were nearly made to pay for not turning
their domination into goals when Talbot no 9 Shane Millard cracked a shot against the bar midway through the second half. But two minutes later a corner on the left by Bobby Jenkins found the head of Shane Andrews. His effort appeared to have crossed the line before being hacked clear but the ball found it's way to the Beard who smacked a superb 25 yard volley across goal into the top corner, who needs goal line technology? Manager Tierney decided this was the time to rest the ferret and he was replaced by substitute George Ball. With ten minutes remaining Paul Metherington scored Marshfield's third, Ian McPherson won the ball in midfield played a one two with Nick Davis then dinked the ball into the path of Methers who made no mistake volleying past Marks. With time running a superb cross from deep out on the left wing by Bobby Jenkins gave Andy Jefferies the opportunity to complete his hat trick heading home at the far post.

Sunday 2nd December 2007

Marshfield 2 Larkhall Sunday 2

Marshfield lost their 100% league record in this ill tempered match at the Withymead. Larkhall played towards the estate end in the first half and were soon ahead when Thaun Lam beat Scott Windle with a dipping volley after fifteen minutes. The visitors were having more of the possession and scored a second before the break when Neil Dain scored from the penalty spot. After the interval a revitalised Marshfield pulled a goal back when Bobby Jenkins broke free on the left and his chip beat keeper Rob Cartwright and while the ball rolled towards the empty net Andy Jefferies was first on hand to lash the ball home. The home side were now back in the game however Marshfield had to wait until the 86th minute before David Jenkins found space in the area and his left foot shot eluded Cartwright for the equaliser.

Sunday 25th November 2007 - Stan Milsom Cup Quarter Final

Marshfield 1 Kingsmead 5

Stan Milsom Cup holders Marshfield were soundly beaten in this feisty Quarter Final between two of the competition favourites. Referee Colin Mills was kept busy in the opening minutes and eventually lost his patience with the yellow card appearing for two Kingsmead players. At this stage there were more handbags being thrown about than in a Marks and Spencers sale! Marshfield did have the edge for the first half hour and grabbed a lead when Bobby Jenkins was brought down in the box and Dan Watson coolly struck home the penalty. Shortly afterwards Jenkins struck the foot of a post with keeper Andy King a spectator but two goals by the visitors shortly before the break turned the game on it's head. Firstly, Jay Riccio looped a header over Scott Windle for the equaliser and then Riccio escaped down the right and squared a ball back across the box for Nick Tiley to roll the ball home
at the far post.

Marshfield went in search of an equaliser at the start of the second half but King was rarely troubled in the visitor's goal. Kingsmead were now taking control of the game and midway through the second period Simon Charity was unlucky when he hit bar and post with the same shot however minutes later he did extend their lead beating Windle from ten yards. With twelve minutes remaining Ross Andrews gave away a penalty and Jay Riccio scored at the second attempt after Windle had made a fine stop to the first effort. Minutes from time Riccio completed his hat-trick finishing from close range after a fine end to end move by the visitors who on this evidence will take some stopping if they are not going to win the Stan Milsom trophy in May.

Sunday 4th November, 2007

Marshfield 7 Jazz Sports 0

Fireworks at the Withy’

Marshfield cruised to victory in this first ever Division 1 meeting between the two clubs. The game was all but over at the interval with Marshfield 4-0 up and all the goals coming from Russell Lodge. The home side were ahead as early as the fourth minute when Lodge crashed home a 25 yard left foot shot which sailed into the far corner of the net. It was 2-0 after twenty minutes when a through ball from Ross Andrews found Lodge and he made light work of sidestepping Tom Hulbert and rolled the ball into the empty net. Five minutes later and it was hat trick time when right wing cross from Emile Wratten found Russell Lodge, he deceived his marker and found the top corner of the net. The visitors were being run ragged at the back and Lodge bagged his fourth from close range minutes before the break following a cross from Mike Phillpott. The Jazz strikers were struggling to create anything up front and the nearest they came in the first half was a header from Pete Wakenshaw which sailed inches over the bar following a free kick from Jonny Dolman.

In the second half Marshfield continued to pile on the misery for Jazz and George Ball scored the fifth, retrieving a cross from Ross Andrews and smashing a shot beyond Hulbert. If the Withymead had any seats you would have heard them clattering at this point as two Jazz fans had seen enough and left the ground! It was also enough for Tom Hulbert as he decided he could make more of an impression playing outfield and Jonny Dolman took over the keeper’s jersey! But Marshfield were in no mood to relax and the hard working Tom Brown eventually got on the score sheet when he was first to a through ball from George Ball and squeezed a shot beyond Dolman. Substitute Sammy Johnston then livened up the home crowd when he collected a pass just inside the Jazz half made ground and then unleashed a shot from some forty yards which Dolman was happy to see go just wide. With minutes remaining the home side added a seventh when a corner from George Ball was headed home
by the ever youthful Mike Phillpott.

Somerset County Sunday Challenge Cup - Sunday 21st October, 2007

Cutters Friday 3 Marshfield 1

For the second week running Marshfield were short of five or six key players varying from injury, suspension to Tom Brown working at the Beach Race at Weston Super Mare.

Meanwhile Cutters Friday appeared to have a quality side, not a beer belly in sight and it didn’t take long for the home side to take the lead. After just six minutes Cutters dissected the Marshfield defence and Rob Skeates was on hand to round keeper Scott Windle and roll the ball into the empty net. Marshfield continued to soak up a lot of pressure, rarely threatening in attack although Paul King had a sniff of a chance before the visitors fell further behind. Danger man Rob Skeates was the scorer from close range, reacting first after Marshfield failed to clear a corner. Cutters had further chances before the break and Marshfield appeared to be the happier to hear the half time whistle.

After a frank discussion of what went wrong before the break Marshfield went in search of a more positive second half performance and seconds after the restart Bobby Jenkins almost gave them a lifeline when his shot went narrowly wide! After 65 minutes Russell Lodge limped out of the game for Marshfield and at the same time Danny Edwards was substituted. On came Rob Gent and 36 year old Guy Barker-Hall. Almost immediately, a throw in on the left reached Barker-Hall, he swung a cross into the middle and Paul King scored, 2-1. For the first time in the match Marshfield were in the ascendancy but several promising positions came to nothing!

With eighteen minutes remaining a bizarre incident occurred when Cutter’s Lee Dixon produced a great save by Scott Windle who turned the shot onto a post only for the ball to rebound back to Scott Windle, back onto the post for the second time before Windle gratefully grabbed it. Minutes later though Windle was not so lucky when he conceded a penalty and Rob Skeates spot kick found the corner of the net for his hat-trick. This time there was no way back for Marshfield’s and the Somerset Cup adventure was over for another season.

Sunday 14th October 2007
League Division 1

Marshfield 3 Odd Down SC 2

Marshfield Manager Ken Tierney had a host of selection problems before the Odd Down game when he discovered that Shane Andrews and Ian McPherson had not recovered from injuries, Paul King was unavailable, striker Andy Jefferies was still ruled out due to suspension, Ross Andrews was stranded at Yate without any transport and Danny Edwards was asleep in a van somewhere in the Parish and out of radio contact, oh the joys of Sunday morning football! Added to this, skipper Dan Watson had to leave at half time to attend a Christening although there was some good news for Ken with keeper Scott Windle back from injury having recovered from his broken nose. It was also first matches of the season for Davy Jenkins and Sammy Johnston and a first start for Mike Phillpott. Meanwhile Odd Down had arrived with a star studded line up including prolific scorers Glenn Witts and Dan Willis and their front line was strengthened with ex Horseshoe striker Gary Jefferies. So with Marshfield and Odd Down occupying third and fourth positions respectively in the 1st Division there was plenty on today’s match for the good size Withymead crowd to look forward to!

After a minutes silence in memory of Dave Short, ex landlord of the Nelson and a great supporter of Marshfield Football Club, the home side kicked off and it wasn’t long before the pace of the Jenkins brothers was causing problems for the Downer’s defence. Bobby Jenkins had already gone close by the time that Marshfield opened the scoring on twelve minutes. Emile Wratten sent a long ball in from the right which was helped on by Bobby Jenkins and Davy Jenkins was on hand to drill a shot past Spider Herbert from ten yards. The home side were two up after half an hour when, after more good work from Davy Jenkins on the right, Tom Brown scored his first goal of the season. Just before the break Odd Down had their best chance of the half when they were
awarded a free kick on the edge of the area but Gary Jefferies fiercely struck free kick hit the chest of Russell Lodge and was hacked clear by a relieved Mike Phillpott.

Four minutes after the break Odd Down pulled a goal back when Ross Andrews, who had only just replaced Dan Watson, fouled Glenn Witts and Paddy O’Brien coolly slotted the resulting penalty past Scott Windle. Odd Down were now pushing men forward but a cross field pass midway through the half was intercepted by Ben Leslie, he immediately released Bobby Jenkins who ran half the length of the pitch before steering the ball past Herbert.

With ten minutes remaining Scott Windle made a fantastic save to deny Jefferies but almost immediately was conceded a floated cross from Ben Parsons to set up a nail biting finish but Marshfield had done enough to earn a valuable three points.

Stan Milsom Cup, October 7th 2007

Marshfield 5 Hinton Charterhouse 0

Marshfield’s goal keeping jinx struck again after stand in keeper Ian McPherson was injured after only ten minutes of today’s game. McPherson was only playing in goal as Scott Windle is still on the injured list and Julian Shipp and Neill Sheppard were unavailable. After a lengthy stoppage Danny Edwards took over the gloves and his first duty was to take a free kick from his penalty area which resulted in a goal at the other end for Bobby Jenkins although there were excellent contributions from Shane Andrews and Ben Leslie in between. Hinton’s defence took a battering in the first half and keeper Florian LeClerq was nearly beaten several times before Russell Lodge smashed in a free kick for the second following a foul on Ross Andrews.

After the break it was more pressure on LeClerq with Tom Brown and George Ball both going close. In fact the Bobby, George combination were creating regular openings in the visitor’s defence and from one flighted Emile Wratten cross, Bobby Jenkins brought the ball down with one touch and smashed home an arrow like shot for the third!

Jenko’s hat trick arrived twenty minutes from time when he headed home a Ben Leslie corner and five minutes later netted his fourth. A quick free kick by Dan Watson following a foul on Ross Andrews released Jenkins who scored at the near post past the despairing LeClerq. Hinton rarely threatened the Marshfield goal although Danny Edwards did hang well to a shot by Scott Newton.

It was nice to see Norman Pullin watching from the line, Norman was Marshfield’s keeper nearly fifty years ago and he was keen to voice his opinion on today’s green jersey wearers especially Danny Edwards, Marshfield’s fourth keeper in four games! Sadly we can’t print what he said as we are trying to stamp out bad language at the club!

Manor Park Rangers 2 Marshfield 3

1st Division Champions Marshfield were given a tough opening fixture to the 2007/08 season with an away match at Manor Park Rangers and their task was made that much harder with a seventh minute dismissal of Andy Jefferies.

The home side had just been awarded a penalty when referee Richard Palmer deemed Jefferies comments enough to justify a red card. Fortunately for the visitors, Ross Pressley’s spot kick lacked power and Scott Windle made a fine save to his right. Marshfield re-arranged their line up but soon fell a goal behind to a long range dipping effort from Danny Bond which caught Scott Windle off his line. Marshfield’s defence now had to dig in playing much deeper but still attacking Manor Park on the break. The change worked as the home side began pumping long balls into the area which were food and drink to centre backs Shane Andrews and Russell Lodge. Meanwhile at the other end Bobby Jenkins was a constant threat and five minutes before the break Marshfield grabbed a deserved equaliser when a great run and cross from Jenkins fell to Ian McPherson fifteen yards out and his low shot
found the corner of the net.

After the interval, it was more of the same with Luke Lock and Dan Watson both releasing Bobby Jenkins to cause havoc down the left and following one of these runs his cross shot narrowly missed the far post. Minutes later Jenkins repeated the move and this time his cross shot came back off the post and into the net to give Marshfield the lead. Manor Park battled to get back into the game and Scott Windle did well to turn efforts over the bar and round the post for corners. After 75 minutes Marshfield extended their lead when another Jenkins cross found Ian McPherson, his initial effort was blocked but Nick Davis was on hand to smash home the lose ball, 3-1.

Emile Wratten and Paul King ran their socks off for the cause but with time running out the home side grabbed a consolation when Ant Burden scored from long range but Marshfield held on for a well deserved three points.

Marshfield supporters were in agreement that this was one of the best (ten man) team performances for some time and a great way for Ken Tierney to start his managerial reign.

Sunday 29th April 2007 Nelson Clinch Championship!!

GT Sports 0 Nelson 6

Sunday, April 29th, 2007 at ten minutes past twelve referee Dave Mott blew his whistle and Marshfield Nelson were crowned Bath & District Division 1 Champions for the first ever time. A 6-0 victory away to G T Sports at Newton Memorial gave Nelson the three points that were needed to see off nearest rivals and former Champions Horseshoe Sports.

Marshfield were in no mood to let this game slip away and were three goals up after only fifteen minutes. The rout started as early as the fourth minute when a Rich Oldfield free kick was headed on by Matt Windle into the path of Andy Jefferies who rifled the ball into the corner much to the joy of the Nelson players and supporters. Minutes later and it was two when Rich Oldfield sent a scorcher into the far corner of the net from lets say 25 yards! Shortly after this a corner on the left by Ross Andrews fell kindly to Nick Davis who steered a shot through a ruck of players for Nelson's third. The game at this stage was becoming a demolition job but a depleted G T side fought back and went close to scoring on a couple of occasions before the break.

But after the interval normal service resumed when Ross Andrews fed Bobby Jenkins who smashed home Nellie's fourth beating stand in keeper Ross Beaverstock at his near post. And after 65 minutes Beaverstock was picking the fifth out of his net after letting a Ross Andrews free kick from wide on the left slip through his hands. Then with ten minutes remaining Nick Davis set Andy Jefferies free and he slotted his shot past the despondent Beaverstock for number six! Cue Celebrations, get them bottles open! Who's paying for these the Treasurer was heard to say!

Unity Sports 0 Marshfield Nelson 4

A tremendous Andy Jefferies hat-trick in the last fifteen minutes of this match helped take Marshfield Nelson to the top of Division 1 for the first time this season. Up until Jefferies goals went in Unity had pounded Nelson's defence in search of an equaliser to Dan Watson's early penalty awarded for hands against Michael Hodry.

Nelson appeared to be hanging on for a 1-0 win until Dan Watson's free kick from central midfield was controlled and volleyed home by Jefferies much to the delight and relief of the Marshfield players and support. Minutes later it was 3-0 when another Dan Watson free kick was headed against the bar by Bobby Jenkins and the partial clearance was buried into the corner of the net by that man Jefferies.

With time running out a superb cross field ball by Bobby Jenkins set Ben Leslie free and his run and cross was met by Andy Jefferies who curled a shot around despairing Unity keeper Jamie Ranklin. This was Marshfield Nelson's seventh league win in sixteen torrid April days and now leaves them requiring just one more win from their two remaining games to secure the League Division 1 title for the first time.

Sunday 22nd April, 2007 Tom Morgan Cup Semi-Final

Manor Park Rangers 3 Nelson 2

(Match declared void Nelson won rematch 2-0)

"A competition too far" was how manager Mike Lodge described this defeat after Marshfield Nelson had played their twelth Cup match of the season!
Nelson had travelled to Radstock for today's game on the back of five league wins in nine days and they were ahead after fifteen minutes when Bobby Jenkins strong run and cross was swept home by Nick Davis. Four minutes later Manor Park were level when Ross Presley bent a free kick around Nelson's defensive wall into the corner of the net. As the half wore on Marshfield were looking the more dangerous and deservedly took a 2-1 interval lead when Bobby Jenkins headed back across goal for Nick Davis to volley home past keeper Gary Stevens.

At the start of the second half Andy Jefferies was unlucky not to add to Nelson's lead when he robbed a Manor Park defender but his chip over Gary Stevens went narrowly wide of the post.
After 57 minutes it was 2-2 when another Ross Presley free kick was misjudged by Nelson keeper Julian Shipp and the ball rolled agonisingly over the line. Ten minutes later and the home side were ahead when Ian McPherson was adjudged to have handled on the line and was shown the red card and it was that man Presley again who stroked home the penalty for his hat-trick.

Ten man Nelson were struggling with Manor Park's set pieces and another free kick was headed off the line by Rich Oldfield with the wall well beaten. With time running out Nelson threw men forward and Nick Davis was unlucky to see his effort hacked off the line by Dave Fairweather then seconds later Andy Jefferies blazed over when well placed. Julian Shipp then pulled off a great save when John Kilburn broke clear with only the keeper to beat. With time running out Andy Jefferies had the ball in the net for Marshfield but this was ruled out for offside and then with seconds left Paul King's point blank effort was somehow cleared off the line.

Marshfield Nelson 3 G T Sports 1

Nelson won their fifth game in nine days when they overcame a strong G T Sports challenge at the Withymead. The home side dominated the early stages but it was G T who scored first when Leigh Cooper robbed Shane Andrews then cooly rounded Scott Windle before rolling the ball into the empty net. Despite this reverse Nelson continued to press forward but G T keeper Adam Nolan was having an inspired match beating away several fine efforts. Even when he was beaten early in the second half Stu Hunter dived full length to head Dan Watson's shot clear for a corner.

The eventual breakthrough for Marshfield came on 58 minutes when Nelson were awarded a penalty for handball and Dan Watson struck the penalty into the corner of the net for 1-1.Nelson increased the pressure but time was ebbing away until with thirteen minutes remaining Ross Andrews flicked the ball onto Bobby Jenkins who volleyed into the far corner of the net from twenty yards. Five minutes later the large Nelson support went delirious again as Dan Watson's pass was won by Bobby Jenkins who sidestepped keeper Adam Nolan to leave the goal at his mercy, 3-1. Nick Davis nearly added to the lead late on but the score remained the same and Nelson collected another valuable three points

Marshfield Nelson 2 Team DBA 0

At this stage of the season it's all about the result and not the performance and tonight Nelson got the result despite a frustrating performance at the Withymead.

Nelson grabbed an early lead after twelve minutes when Bobby Jenkins helped the ball into the net following a corner on the left by Ben Leslie. After this it was a lot of Nelson pressure but DBA keeper Ben Heap was equal to anything coming his way. At the start of the second half Scott Windle made an outstanding save to prevent an equaliser when he dived full length to tip a Tom Menzies header onto the bar and then caught the rebound as he landed. Just after the hour mark Nelson were two up, a throw in on the left by Luke Lock was headed on by Bobby Jenkins and Ross Andrews cooly slotted the ball past Ben Heap.

The home side appeared to relax after this and went close to adding to their lead on several occasions, none more so than when Andy Jefferies tricked his marker but his shot came back off the post with Heap well beaten.
So it wasn't the mauling everyone was hoping for against one of the basement sides however three points are three points and that's now four wins in seven days for the Nelson.

Sunday 15th April 2007

Centurion FM Sports 1 Marshfield Nelson 3

Another steaming hot day on Lansdown where Nelson turned up the heat on league leaders Horseshoe with their third win in five days. Centurion battled to get a foothold in the game but it was Marshfield who came closest to taking the lead when Ben Leslie's effort was ruled out for an infringement and then minutes later the same player struck a post with Centurion keeper Andy King stranded.

With the temperature rising the interval came with the scoreline goal-less and with Bobby Jenkins sidelined through injury. Manager Mike Lodge decided to switch Ben Leslie to the right wing for the second half and was immediately rewarded when his pass disected the Centurion defence to put Dan Pitman in the clear and he curled a shot inside the post to give Nelson the lead. Minutes later the visitors were two up with Andy Jefferies slotting home a pass from Russell Lodge after a fine move down the right. With 65 minutes gone it was 3-0 when Ben Leslie's corner to the back post was headed powerfully home by Shane Andrews who is suddenly becoming Nelson's goal machine with four goals in the last three games. Andy Jefferies had two chances to increase Nelson's lead however his first effort hit the bar and his second was turned onto the post. Centurion grabbed a consolation near the end when Martin King's shot from the edge of the box eluded Scott Windle.

Thurs 12th April 2007

Flan O'Briens 0 Marshfield Nelson 8

Another night, another match, and thankfully another three points for Marshfield Nelson in their battle to close the gap on leaders Horseshoe.

The kick off was delayed for thirty minutes for the home team to arrive and some of them may have wished they hadn't bothered as Nelson set about improving their goal difference. Flans, who needed the points at the other end of the table started brightly and came close on two occasions before falling behind to a Dan Watson penalty after Bobby Jenkins was brought down in the box. Shane Andrews then scored his third goal in two games to double Nelson's lead at the break.
By the time Ian McPherson had smashed home a volley for number three it became a damage limitation exercise by Flans. But Nelson were having none of that and Bobby Jenkins drove in a fourth quickly followed by a delightful chip by Ben Leslie for the fifth. Flans stand in keeper couldn't get his shirt of quick enough when regular keeper Andy Murphy arrived but even he couldn't stop the goal rush with Andy Jefferies netting a sixth before substitute Dave Jenkins smacked in the last two!

Yet another good night for the Nelson supporters and also the Blathwayt pub, is it true the Chairman has asked them to become a sponsor?

Horseshoe Sports 1 Marshfield Nelson 2

Marshfield Nelson, fresh from a two week lay off, commenced the first of a gruelling nine matches in nineteen days against the previously unbeaten league leaders Horseshoe Sports and they came away with a deserved victory.
On a rock hard playing surface, the first few minutes resembled teams playing on an ice rink but gradually the sides found their feet and Nelson were up for the battle.

Champions Horseshoe seemed content to defend and try and catch Nelson on the break but they were nearly outdone when a Bobby Jenkins cross was superbly headed home by Dan Watson only to be ruled out by a linesman's flag. Shortly after this escape Horseshoe took the lead when a free kick on the right was headed home by Steve Hill, a real sucker punch for the visitors.

But despite losing their last two matches, Nelson continued to venture forward and were rewarded minutes before half time when Shane Andrews managed to reach a Dan Watson free kick at the far post and looped the ball back over Wes Taynton for the equaliser.

After the break Nelson pressed forward and with Horseshoe's defence coming under increased pressure it was no surprise when Nelson took the lead. The goal came on the hour mark and was the result of yet another set piece and it was the same combination however Shane Andrews header from Dan Watson's free kick gave Taynton no chance, a bullet into the corner, 2-1 to the visitors!

Horseshoe now had to show some adventure and this gave Nelson more time and opportunity to exploit the overworked Sports defence. Substitutes Dan Pitman and Dave Jenkins came on and chased every lost cause and it was the latter who almost scored at the back post when a superb run and cross by brother Bob was volleyed goalwards but Taynton produced a miraculous save to keep the game alive. Meanwhile at the other end and with time running out Scott Windle had to dive full length to turn away a fierce drive at the expense of a corner but Nelson hung on for an excellent victory to put their own title ambitions back on track! Mention should also go to the large contingent of Nelson supporters who made their way to the game to cheer on the lads! A good night for everyone including the Blathwayt pub!

Sunday 25th March 2007

Odd Down SC 5 Marshfield Nelson 2

Marshfield Nelson's miserable March continued with a 5-2 drubbing at Odd Down. This was Nelson's second successive defeat and put a severe dent in any title hopes the club had.
Mattie Harding was at the heart of most of the home side's attacks and it was no surprise when he lobbed Julian Shipp for the opener. Nelson were gifted a lifeline when Tommy Larcombe headed over his own keeper for the equaliser but it was that man Harding whose cross was turned in by Dan Willis to give Odd Down a 2-1 interval lead.

Ten minutes after the break Harding smacked in a volley from an acute angle on the left to make Nelson's task even greater. Two minutes later Andy Jefferies reduced the arrears when he chipped Dean Whitley to make it 3-2. Marshfield pushed men forward in search of an equaliser but were left vulnerable at the back and Harding took full advantage when he fired home from the edge of the box to complete his hat-trick.

Ian McPherson was unlucky when his curling effort came back off the inside of the post but Odd Down's victory was complete when Glen Witts headed home a Harding cross for Downer's fifth.

Nelson Reserves 2 Real Batheaston 1

After a few weeks where the management was constantly frustrated by the 'no show' of the younger players in the squad, drastic action was required.
Out went the youth and in came the experience. The first six names on the team list had a combined age close to 250 and somewhere around 2500 appearances for Marshfield clubs. For the records the team was:-
1 Neil Sheppard 2 Andy Elliott 3 Gary Hodder 4 Mike Phillpott 5 Guy Barker Hall
6 Mark Hodder 7 Sam Johnston 8 James Williams 9 Jamie Lucas ( Sub 59 mins) 10 Joe Wright 11 Rob Finnamore 12 David Jenkins

With Batheaston thinking they would get an easy game, the Marshfield boys (and men!!) were out to prove a point. With a shout of 'blood on the studs!' right from the off the Nellie back four looked like they'ed never been apart. The team played well against the prevailing wind, constantly frustrating the Real forwards. Jamie and Joe both had good chances to take the lead but it was Real who struck first. With the old guard hitting the pain barrier, they started to rely a little too much on the offside trap. With another long ball over the defense who stepped out clearly thinking the lone striker was offside, only with the decision not to be given and give Real an easy tap in. Just before half-time this was a harsh blow.
With oxygen, warm tartan blankets and pacemakers recharged during the break, the boys came out to continue where they had left off. With Jamie struggling to hit a barn door!! Boffer made the decision to bring Dave Jenkins into the fray. His entrance made an immediate impact. Picking up the ball in the middle of the park, he sent James through down the right hand side. Who showed great commitment in chasing the ball to the touchline and crossing for Rob to pick the ball off the defenders to strike home. With renewed vigour the boys set about bombarding the Real defense until the 81st min when they were rewarded with a freekick just outside the right hand side of the box. A certain Gary Hodder stepped up and slotted (more like bobbled!) the ball into the net to round up a truly memorable and enjoyable game for all involved.

Larkhall Sunday 1 Marshfield Nelson 0

Marshfield Nelson must be wondering how they lost this match as they had more than enough possession and chances to have won this game comfortably. Larkhall took the lead after fifteen minutes when Rich Hughes found himself free on the edge of the box and he curled a shot into the far corner of the net. After this Nelson dominated the game but couldn't convert their possession into goals. Larkhall defended doggedly and their keeper Ash Tucker was well protected by the over worked home defence. Meanwhile Scott Windle was almost an onlooker for the second half as Nelson tried to prize an opening but unfortunately it was one of those days and the points and the Nelson's 100% league record were gone!

Tom Morgan Cup Quarter Final, 4th March 2007

Marshfield Nelson 6 Jazz Sports 1

Division 2, high Flyers, Jazz Sports were well off key in this first ever meeting between the two clubs. Nelson took an early lead when a move down the left presented an opening for Ben Leslie on the edge of the area and his shot cannoned in off the foot of the post. The atrocious conditions made it difficult for both sides but Marshfield adapted the better and scored a second on 22 minutes. Ben Leslie was again involved and his right wing cross took a wicked deflection off the head of Micky Deverall to leave Jazz keeper Tom Hulbert stranded. Nelson were now causing Jazz all sorts of problems and the home side were unlucky with two further efforts which came back off the bar with another being kicked off the line. Tom Hulbert also pulled off two good saves during this onslaught but had no answer to Nelson's third goal. Dan Watson's free kick, from wide on the left, was headed back across the goal by Shane Andrews for Bobby Jenkins to poke the ball home from close range for a 3-0 interval lead.
Any hopes of a second half comeback by Jazz were dashed two minutes after the break when Dan Pitman's superb twenty yard shot found the top right corner of the net. Jazz were now realising how Marshfield might have got it's name as the pitch was resembling somewhat of a quagmire but they did pull a goal back when Jimmy Webb's cross deceived Bobby Jenkins and Damien Sands was on hand to beat Neill Sheppard from the edge of the box. But Nelson restored their four goal lead almost immediately when Dan Watson stroked a penalty into the bottom corner of the net after Shane Andrews had been brought down on the edge of the box. Ian McPherson scored Nelson's sixth and final goal fifteen minutes from time when he lost his marker and cooly rounded the advancing Tom Hulbert to side foot home.
Jazz were unlucky in the last few minutes when Terry Deverall's shot came back off a post but it was Nelson who progressed to the Tom Morgan Cup Semi-Finals.

25th February 2007 Division 1

Marshfield Nelson 3 Kingsmead 1

Nelson were back to league action this week after last Sunday's gutwrenching defeat in the Somerset Cup.
Nelson started brightly and opened the scoring when Bobby Jenkins collected a deep cross from the right and chipped it over the despairing Jack Mitchell. Midway through the half Jenkins grabbed his and Marshfield's second when he battled through several challenges to score from close range. But Kingsmead were always dangerous and Jay Riccio went close with two free kicks before a well worked corner had Scott Windle going full stretch before Bobby Jenkins hacked the ball to safety.

Five minutes before the break Nelson grabbed a third when Dan Watson's floated free kick fell invitingly for Russell Lodge to score from ten yards. There was still time in the first half for Neil Barnes to head narrowly wide from a Jay Riccio free kick.
In the second half, Kings worked hard to get a foothold in the game but created few chances while Andy Jefferies went close to adding to Nelson's lead after a mazy run but his shot hit the side netting.

In the dying minutes Kings grabbed a consolation when Callum Davies was left unmarked to stab the ball home from close range with Marshfield's defence appealing for an offside flag which didn't come.

Somerset Cup Semi-Final - Sunday 18th February 2007

Marshfield Nelson 2 AFC Legends 2

(After Extra Time 2-2, Legends won 6-5 on penalties)

Nelson's dreams of a Somerset Cup Final appearance were dramatically dashed in a sudden death penalty shoot out. The home side started at pace and a Bobby Jenkins run and cross was hastily cleared for a corner as early as the second minute but Nelson were ahead shortly afterwards when a throw in from the right was headed on by Russell Lodge into the path of Bobby Jenkins who swept the ball home, 1-0.

Two free kicks by Dan Watson and Bobby Jenkins caused concern for the Legends defence before Luke House's effort was ruled out for an infringement for the visitors. It was now end to end with Russell Lodge's free kick going inches wide while Scott Windle reacted brilliantly to turn over a deflected Mark Simons effort. But Nelson were two up after half an hour when a Bobby Jenkins corner was headed back into the mix by Russell Lodge for Andy Jefferies to flick the ball past Danny Simons. And it could have been even better for Marshfield before the break when Russell Lodge carved an opening in the Legends defence but Andy Jefferies screwed his shot wide of the far post and moments before the break Rich Oldfield rose at the far post but headed narrowly wide.

After the break Legends were given a lifeline when Simon Elsley released Mark Simons who struck a sweet shot into the corner to make it 2-1. Back came the Nelson, roared on by a large home crowd and Russell Lodge was unlucky when he headed against the underside of the bar following a great run and cross by Bobby Jenkins. But midway through the half it was that man Mark Simons again whose free kick eluded Scott Windle and it was 2-2. Ten minutes later and Simons had the chance to win it but his after being brought down in the area his penalty was brilliantly beaten away by Scott Windle.

It was still 2-2 at ninety minutes and for the second time in two weeks it was extra time for the Nelson. Chances continued to come and go, Shane Andrews headed into the keeper's arms and Ben Leslie's free kick went narrowly wide before the dreaded penalty shoot out arrived in which Nelson eventually went down by six penalties to five.

Sunday 11th February, 2007

Moonshine Gladbach 1 Marshfield Nelson 4

Nelson made heavy weather of defeating lowly Moonshine Gladbach in a game which was switched to Lansdown to enable the game to be played.

Marshfield Nelson attacked from the start and Russell Lodge went close to scoring when he hit the bar from a good position. However it was Moonshine who took the lead when Nelson's defence failed to clear a throw in and Mark Crocker was presented with the easiest of chances to score.

Nelson's response was almost immediate when Mike Wright in the Moon's goal lost a cross and Russell Lodge floated the ball over several defenders and into the far corner for the equaliser. Nelson then laid siege to the Moon's goal but a combination of poor finishing and desperate defending kept the home side in the game.

After the break it was much the same with opportunities coming and going but eventually, after 75 minutes, Moons defence cracked under the pressure. A Bobby Jenkins corner from the left eluded keeper Mark Wright and Andy Jefferies was on hand for the simplest of tap ins. Five minutes later and Jefferies netted his second although the Moons defence did seem to have good appeals for an offside decision which didn't come.

With time running out, a flowing move down the right presented Bobby Jenkins with a chance to score Nelson's fourth from ten yards.

Sunday 4th February, 2007 - Tom Morgan Cup 2nd Round

Rose & Crown Vultures 0 Marshfield Nelson 0

after extra time 0-0, Nelson won 4-3 on penalties

This was an easily forgettable 120 minutes in which Nelson's closest effort was a cross shot from Bobby Jenkins which came back off a post. Apart from that early attempt Nelson couldn't beat the impressive Ondrez Gazda in the Vultures goal who pulled off a number of good saves. At the other end Neill Sheppard made two valuable saves to deny the home side from taking the lead and so it came down to a penalty shoot-out.

Dan Watson scored the first penalty for the Nelson to which Vultures levelled. Andy Jefferies took the second but Gazda saved brilliantly diving to his right. Ben Leslie then equalised and Vultures third penalty taker missed striking the outside of the post. (2-2) Another save from Gazda gave the advantage back to Vultures who then took a 3-2 lead with their fourth penalty.

Rich Oldfield kept Nelson in the tie with a cooly struck effort into the corner before Alessandro Caleca drove what could have been the winner straight at Neill Sheppard to bring a sudden death situation. (3-3) Nick Davis scored to give Nelson the lead but Vultures sixth penalty was again too close to the keeper enabling Neill Sheppard to save and put Marshfield Nelson into the Quarter Finals.

Sunday 28th January, 2007

Marshfield Nelson 2 Larkhall Sunday 0

Nelson struggled to break down a stubborn Larkhall defence in this Division 1 encounter in which the home side dominated for long periods. The home side became more and more frustrated as they created sixteen corners to Larkhall's one by the break.

It looked as though it was going to be scoreless at the interval but as time was running out Nick Davis released Bobby Jenkins who eventually broke the deadlock.
It was the same combination who undone Lark's defence for Nelson's second on the hour mark. This time Nick Davis's diagonal pass found Bobby Jenkins free on the left and his shot beat Ash Tucker to find the far corner of the net.

Larkhall became increasingly adventurous late in the game but it was Nelson who came closest to scoring a third with Tucker making great saves from first Rich Oldfield's header which was on it's way to the top corner and then a fierce volley from Andy Jefferies which was tipped over the bar.

Sunday 21st January 2007 Somerset Sunday Challenge Cup

Marshfield Nelson 6 Tone Youth FC 0

Marshfield Nelson produced one of their best performances of the season to demolish Taunton side Tone Youth to progress into the semi-finals of the Somerset Cup.

Tone, former winners of this competition albeit under the name of Taunton Youth, had no answer to Nelson's pace and perhaps the biggest surprise was that the first goal didn't arrive until seven minutes before the break. Tone's defence had been working overtime after a re-shuffle following an early injury to centre back Mike Bull and it was uncertainty at the back which presented Russell Lodge with time and space to give Nelson the lead.
Tone rarely threatened up front with Shane Andrews and Rich Oldfield dealing with any aerial attack and Ian McPherson and Emile Wratten preventing any danger from the wings. The few occasions in which Tone did breach Nelson's back four were thwarted by the excellent handling of Scott Windle.

However two goals early in the second half put paid to any thought of a recovery for Tone, first Nick Davis converted a cross from Bobby Jenkins before Andy Jefferies smashed home a volley for Marshfield's third. Ben Leslie and Bobby Jenkins were causing havoc on the flanks for the home side but it was former Farnborough Town striker Nick Whyborn who next went close to scoring but his chip beat Scott Windle and the post. Andy Jefferies then grabbed his second and Nelson's fourth with a shot in which Tone keeper Jon Edwards should have done better before Tone's Ryan Hocking saw his shot come back off the post enabling Scott Windle to palm the rebound to safety. Edwards who had made some fine saves for the visitors was left exposed again when Bobby Jenkins fine run and cross found Russell Lodge for Nelson's fifth and the rout was complete when Ian McPherson was allowed to run unchallenged into the Tone box and his pass created space for Dan Watson to score from close range.

Sunday 14th January 2007 Division One

Kingsmead 1 Marshfield Nelson 5

Marshfield Nelson kept up the pressure on the League leaders with this excellent win over second placed Kingsmead. Nelson were quick out of the blocks and were a goal up after only five minutes following Dan Watson's penalty. Bobby Jenkins had burst into the area but was brought down by Kings' keeper Jack Mitchell leaving Watson to cooly tuck away the penalty. Kings' fought hard to get back into the game and Jay Riccio's close range effort brought the best out of Scott Windle. Nelson's second came on 35 minutes after a poor clearance from Mitchell found Russell Lodge who had time and space to find the corner of the net.

Four minutes after the break and it was 3-0 when Shane Andrews powered a header into the roof of the net following Dan Watson's corner for his first goal of the season. Nelson continued to press forward and substitute Emile Wratten created space for Bobby Jenkins to score from fifteen yards with twenty minutes left. The visitor's fifth came shortly after when Russell Lodge released Nick Davis on the left and his delicate chip over Mitchell came back off the post to leave Andy Jefferies the easiest of finishes.

Kingsmead responded by sending on veteran Al Moxham and the 42 year old immediately crashed in a consolation goal from thirty yards. Nelson responded by sending on veteran Mike Phillpott who didn't score but did go close from even further out but his effort just sailed clear of the Kings' bar.

Sunday 14th Jan 2007 - League Division 3

Marshfield Nelson Reserves 4 Hadley Arms 3

After a short pre-match speech made by Boffer to the players in which thanks was expressed to Ian Lanning for what he had done for the club and ground rules were laid out, the team came out to make a positive start. This positive start was converted into a goal in the 11th min when an pinpoint cross by Joe Wright was decisively headed home by Dan Pitman. This woke up Hadley and they quickly gained an equaliser in the 16th min. After this the home side dominated the rest of the first half with Richard Lock and Joe Wright causing havoc down each wing. The result was a well deserved goal for each player in the 31st and 42nd min respectively.

After a crucial goal by Jamie Lucas in 58th min and controversial disallowed goal by Dan Pitman, the second half saw Hadley come out fired up and battle well to grab two goals back during the half. This left the last ten minutes being a case of ""The Alamo" as Marshfield fought hard to hold on to their lead. Only a superb last minute save by George Sanderson gave Marshfield all three points which they merited.

Sunday 7th January 2007

Marshfield Nelson 3 Centurion FM Sports 0

Nelson overcame difficult conditions and a determined Centurion side to record their fifth win of the season. Nick Davis set the home side on their way with a stunning strike after only six minutes when he brought the ball down with his right foot then struck a superb twenty yard volley with his left which found the top corner. Nelson's defence was being stretched by a lively Centurion attack and it was only some last ditch defending which kept the lead intact.

Andy Jefferies went close for Marshfield blasting a shot across the face of the Centurion goal but minutes later he found space on the edge of the area to chip the advancing Andy King to give Nelson a two goal lead.
With first half time running out Centurion were given a lifeline when Rich Oldfield appeared to be harshly penalised for fouling Danny Scott and a penalty was awarded. But Steve King's spot kick was brilliantly turned away by Scott Windle who then managed to save the follow up by Lee Bradbury.

In the second half Nelson went close to adding to their lead before Andy Jefferies through ball found Dan Watson who slid the ball past Andy King to seal the points. Lee Bradbury went close for the visitors with a rasping drive which was just to high before a huge chorus of boo's greeted the ever popular substitute Mike Philpott for the last three minutes

Stan Milsom Cup Semi-Final At Lansdown, 17 December 2006

Southdown Rangers 1 Marshfield Nelson 6

A serious injury marred this semi-final when Southdown keeper Paul Newman fractured his leg following a collision with one of his own defenders. The injury occured ten minutes into the second half just as Andy Jefferies headed Nelson into a 2-1 lead.

The first half had finished all square at one goal apiece however Nelson had dominated the half and squandered several promising positions. Nelson were awarded a penalty after seven minutes when Sean Vine bundled over Nick Davis and after consulting his assistant, referee Tony Beaverstock pointed to the spot. Bobby Jenkins took the kick but his shot went wide of the post much to the relief of the home fans. Nelson's opener wasn't far away though, Ben Leslie sent a speculative shot in from the edge of the area which Paul Newman failed to gather and the ball rolled into the net. Nelson continued to press and free kicks from Dan Watson and Bobby Jenkins and a header from Shane Andrews all went wide. Rangers equalised against the run of play when Pete Collins hit a tremendous shot over Julian Shipp after 25 minutes.

After the interval Nelson seemed to bombard Southdown even more with Jefferies, Jenkins and Leslie all going close before Jefferies headed home from close range. Following the injury to keeper Newman there was a half hour stoppage while an ambulance crew treated the stricken player and ferried him off to hospital. Defender Sean Vine then took over the keeper's shirt but Southdown were now down to ten players having already used their substitutes.

Nelson were now attacking at will and Luke Lock was unlucky with a shot past the post after exchanging passes with Andy Jefferies. Ben Leslie eventually gave Nelson a two goal cushion when he beat the offside trap and his shot was partially saved but still had enough on it to roll into the corner of the net. Nick Davis then blazed just over the bar before the same player's cross shot was deflected past his own keeper by Mattie Newman.
With twelve minutes remaining substitute Paul King hit a shot from the edge of the area which was deflected past the helpless Vine by Andy Jefferies and then with time running out Ben Leslie completed his hat-trick with a superb dipping volley from 25 yards.

10 December 2006 League Division One

Marshfield Nelson 2 Moonshine Gladbach 1

Marshfield Nelson were pushed all the way by lowly Moonshine Gladbach who until today's match had only won one league game from nine fixtures.
Nelson started brightly and grabbed an early lead when Russell Lodge's shot was deflected past the unfortunate Mike Wright. As the half wore on Marshfield became more and more frustrated at not being able to add to their lead and Manager Mike Lodge switched his wingers in an attempt to freshen things up. This had an immediate impact when Bobby Jenkins scored a second ten minutes before the break.
In the second half Moonshine battled hard to reduce the arrears and were rewarded when Steve Crocker scored after 65 minutes to make the score 2-1. With time running out Mark Liechti deflected a cross against his own post with keeper Wright stranded and then Moons struck a post at the right end but this was as close as they came to snatching a point.

Somerset Cup – Sun 19th November 2006

Great Western 1 Marshfield Nelson 4

MNFC set off at 8.30am, 19th November for their latest Somerset Cup adventure! After away matches against Bridgewater and Taunton sides, this time it was Great Western from the Yeovil League who provided the opposition. A coach load of players and supporters made the journey to the pretty village of Nether Compton on the Dorset border, the venue for this last sixteen match!

The game kicked off in brilliant sunshine and Nelson were soon ahead when Nick Davis scored from close range with the aid of a deflection after just seven minutes. It could have been even better for the visitors when Bobby Jenkins broke clear but he was thwarted by a fine save by Kev Harris. But the game was all square after half an hour when Ashley Dyer's 35 yard shot deceived Scott Windle to make the score 1-1. Great Western were now enjoying more possession and Mattie Taylor went close following a corner from Danny Call, but just before the break Andy Jefferies brilliantly headed home a Luke Lock cross to put the Nellie back in front.

Nelson increased their lead on 62 minutes when Bobby Jenkins found the ball at his feet with only Kev Harris to beat to give the visitor's a decisive two goal lead. Danny Call hit a post for Great Western on 70 minutes but shortly before the end Bobby Jenkins scored a fine individual goal to clinch a hard fought victory for the Nelson.
On the final whistle the visiting supporters made their way to the Griffin's Head, the village local while the players scrubbed up as only they do!

After this it was back on the coach and onto the Great Western pub in Yeovil where a feast of food was waiting for the teams superbly prepared by Paula Reed, Great Western's secretary, what a star! Fed and watered the Nelson boys performed a few of their favourite songs and then challenged the Great Western to a drinking competition which the Nellie were narrow victors. A 3.30 roll call and we were back on the coach by 3.45 but needless to say we only got as far as Radstock before a drinks break was requested. After taking over the Elm Tree for a short session it was "all aboard" again, once we'd got the president out of the Chinese take-away!
Eventually, some ten hours after we left, we were back in Marshfield and I'll let you guess how many headed for the Nelson for a nightcap or two!

Sunday 29th October, 2006 Stan Milsom Cup

Marshfield Nelson 5 Odd Down SC 0

Marshfield Nelson progressed to the Quarter Finals of the Stan Milsom Cup with this comfortable win over Odd Down SC. The home side were three up at the interval courtesy of a Bobby Jenkins hat-trick, the second of these was a stunning 40 yard effort which left keeper Jason Cross stranded. Either side of this "goal of the season" contender were much less memorable goals, a fifth minute penalty and a close range shot just before the break!

In the second half Nelson continued to dominate and Nick Davis rifled home a fourth with twenty minutes to go. The fifth was created and scored by two of Nelson's substitutes, Dave Jenkins created an opening on the right and his pass gave Paul King time and space to drill the ball past Cross into the corner of the net.

Marshfield Nelson 5 Unity Sports 1

Nelson continued their excellent start to the season with a resounding 5-1 victory over Unity Sports in this League Division 1 encounter. Nelson dominated the early part of the match and deservedly lead with a goal from Bobby Jenkins who broke clear of the Unity defence and slid the ball past the advancing Pete Innes.
But almost immediately Unity rocked the home side when Dazell Young beat the Nelson offside trap and rounded Scott Windle for a well taken equaliser. Unity were now in the ascendancy and went close on a couple of occasions before Andy Jefferies struck twice in two minutes to give Nelson a flattering 3-1 interval lead.
In the second half Bobby Jenkins continued to torment the Unity defence creating a fourth goal for the home side scored by Russell Lodge before adding his second and Nelson's fifth

Marshfield Nelson 4 Odd Down SC 3

Odd Down turned this match on its head when they scored three goals in the last twenty minutes to set up a frantic finish.
Marshfield started the stronger and it was no surprise when they took the lead after sixteen minutes, Andy Jefferies was brought down in the area and Russell Lodge stroked home the resulting penalty. Nelson were completely dominating the match at this stage and several clear openings were wasted before Andy Jefferies struck a second on the half hour mark. Further chances were wasted with Lodge, Jefferies and Luke Lock all guilty of missing the target.
Five minutes after the break Bobby Jenkins did knock in the third for the home side and midway through the second half it was four when Danny Watson smashed home a short free kick from Russell Lodge.
But then came the turnaround with Ben Parsons scoring twice in two minutes for the visitors and with ten minutes remaining Glen Witts crashed home a third to make it 4-3.
Odd Down pushed men forward in the remaining minutes in an attempt to grab the equaliser but Nelson held on albeit rather nervously.

Englishcombe Inn 2 Marshfield Nelson Reserves 11

Nelson started the brighter of the two teams creating several early chances, however it was the home side who opened the scoring after catching Marshfield on the counter attack and slotting home from close range. Marshfield were soon level after Player Manager Ian Lanning calmly converted a penalty after an Englishcombe defender was adjudged to have handled the ball. The visitors upped the tempo with some fine passing and both fullbacks getting forward, After 35 minutes Marshfield took the lead with Nick Alford swinging in a corner for Sean Huggins to poke home. In the hot conditions at Lansdown the visitors made the most of the interval scoring straight away through Sam Johnston and again minutes later with Dan Pitman. Nelson showed superior quality on the ball and netting with left back Joe Wright volleying home after fine build up play down the right. Soon after,Johnston & Pitman both scored their second goals of the morning. Englishcombe did manage a second goal after some sloppy defending allowed a cross into the box for a top corner header past stranded sub keeper Sanderson. Player manager Ian Lanning completed his hat-trick with two further srikes, first placing past the keeper from 18 yards then completing his morning scoring from a narrow angle. 15 year old Centre Half Emile Wratten also netted with a header just moments after striking the bar. Marshfield also scored when Mike Jones’ cross was deflected into the net.

Flan O'Briens 0 Marshfield Nelson 5

Mike Lodge made four changes from last weeks narrow victory in an attempt to sharpen things up and he didn't have to wait long to reap the rewards!.
The game was only three minutes old when Ian McPherson picked up a loose ball on the edge of the area and drilled home a low shot with the aid of a slight deflection. Nelson continued to dominate and increased their lead on twenty eight minutes when Andy Jefferies smashed home a superb volley following a right wing cross from Jason Kidner. Shots were now reigning in on Flan's goal and Richard Lock was unlucky when Sean Jenkins pulled off a brilliant save to deny Nelson a third. In the second half Marshfield pushed forward in search of more goals and Andy Jefferies scored his second midway through the half. This goal triggered substitutions from Mike Lodge who sent on Tom Brown for Richard Lock and the old war horse Mike Phillpott for Charlie Harris and it was Tom Brown who netted Nelson's fourth when he smashed the ball into the roof of the net with just three minutes remaining. However there was still time for Andy Jefferies to grab his hat-trick, Dan Watson found himself in oceans of space on the left of midfield, he released Beardie who in turn escaped his marker and curled the ball into the net past the helpless Jenkins.
Just time to mention Shane Andrews who teamed up with Richard Oldfield in the centre of defence, what a partnership that could be!

Sunday 25th September 2005

Marshfield Nelson 5 Kingsmead 1

Marshfield started strongly and created a few early opportunies but it was Kingsmead who dominated the last 25 minutes of the first half taking the lead through Alex Wright. Marshfield dominated the second half and scored five unanswered goals. Richard Lock tapped in the equalizer, Bobby Jenkins headed Marshfield in front and this was followed by two further goals from Richard Lock and a debut goal for substitute Mark Durnell.

Sunday 25 September 2005

FC Bathelona 2 Marshfield Nelson Reserves 7

The Top two sides in Division Six met, after both sides had already scored 40 league goals between them. The visiting team dominated early possession putting pressure on the Batha defence, Marshfield created the first opportunity with a corner falling to player manager Ian Lanning whose goal bound drive from 20 yards was blocked. Bathelona took the lead midway through the first period after a defensive mix-up the home side slotted home from inside the box.
The Nelson response was immediate with a fine solo effort from Jamie Lucas, picking the ball up on the half way line and strode past his opponents before cutting in close to the goal line and bending his shot in off the far post. Marshfield took the lead minutes later after his speed left him one-on-one to net his second. In the second half Marshfield controlled the game with passing that penetrated their opponents defence with Lucas scoring his 3rd after again being put through leaving the Bathelona defence stranded. Captain Matt Bryant scored after good work down the left wing by Lampard and Lanning creating the strike for Bryant. Lucas netted his 4th and 5th with Lanning and Huggins setting him up. Bathelona scored the second after stand in keeper Sam Johnston poorly kicked out only for the ball to be sent back to him but lost his footing and the ball passing him into the net. Nelson scored their 7th when Lanning’s corner was headed home by Sean Huggins. There was a fine defensive partnership between 15 year old Emile Wratten & 46 year old Club Secretary Guy Barker-Hall.

Sunday 9th October 2005

Marshfield Nelson 2 Flan O'Briens 1

A Nelson side desperate to forget last weeks cup setback started the brighter and created several openings before they took the lead on fourteen minutes.
Luke Lock hit a free kick from the half way line which found its way through to Tom Brown who steered the ball past the advancing Sean Jenkins into the corner of the net.
Marshfield were now well on top but struggled to convert their increasing possession into goals. The home supporters had to wait until the 41st minute for Nelson's second goal when a mix up in the Flan's defence presented Russell Lodge with a chance he couldn't miss.
In the second half Flan's increased the tempo and it was no surprise when they pulled a goal back on the hour mark through Sean Mulvihill.
Almost immediately after the re-start Nelson were awarded a penalty for hand ball but Russell Lodge's spot kick was brilliantly saved by Sean Jenkins.
After this Flan's threw everything at Nelson in an attempt to gain an equaliser but it was the home side who were created and missed the best chances.

Marshfield Nelson 5 New Burnt House 4

Nelson won a pulsating nine goal thriller against the League Champions in which the lead changed several times. Marshfield opened the scoring after fifteen minutes when Bobby Jenkins broke free on the left and his low cross took a deflection to wrong foot keeper Dean Book. Burnt House were stung into action and within ten minutes were in front with goals from Ki Davis and Lee O'Brien both capitalising on hesitation in the home side's defence.
Back came the Nelson to make the score 2-2 when Russell Lodge slammed in a volley from close range. With Nelson’s defence all at sea, appropriate for Trafalgar day, Lee Burns chipped in a free kick to give the lead back to the visitors but again the home side stormed back for another equaliser when Bobby Jenkins steered a header away from the stranded Dean Book. In the second half both teams went in search of further goals but it was Nelson who grabbed the lead when a superb cross from Tom Brown was headed home by Russell Lodge. Then with twenty minutes remaining Tom Brown made it 5-3 to Marshfield when he picked up a poor clearance and curled the ball into the corner of the net. Game over, No! With ten minutes remaining Burnt House reduced the arrears when Ki Davis beat the offside trap and stroked the ball past Mattie Gray to give them a glimmer of a point but Marshfield Nelson were not going to give up the lead again and held on to take three vital points and maintain their 100% record. On the final whistle the large home crowd went delirious before most of them headed off to the Nellie for some refreshment.

Sunday 30th October 2005

Team DBA 2 Marshfield Nelson 5

Marshfield Nelson seemed to be cruising to victory over Team DBA as they ran in three goals in the first half hour of this match. Bobby Jenkins scored the first on twelve minutes when he received a long throw in from Dan Watson turned and buried a shot into the far corner. Five minutes later and it was Dan Watson on the score sheet when he picked up a poor goal kick and smashed home an instinctive volley from thirty yards. Twenty eight minutes had gone when the goal of the game arrived. A throw in on the left from Ryan Nicholls found it's way back to Shane Andrews who picked out Ian McPherson on the right wing with a superb diagonal pass. His cross was met by Russell Lodge who gave keeper Rob Palmer no chance. Nelson were now creating a host of chances but it was DBA who grabbed a lifeline when David Berkeley found space in front of goal to make the interval score 3-1. In the second half and with the wind at their backs DBA keeper Rob Palmer showed his team mates where the net was with a huge punt downfield which deceived Mattie Gray in the Nelson goal to make the score 3-2.
But that goal only seemed to spur Marshfield who responded with two goals in two minutes midway through the half. First Russell Lodge broke clear, he rounded Rob Palmer and rolled the ball into the empty net and then Dan Watson scrambled home his second and Nelson's fifth.
There was still time for Bobby Jenkins to strike the bar but Nelson were home and dry, another three points to maintain their lead at the top of the league.

Sunday 8th January 2006  Tom Morgan Cup – Round 1 at the Withy

Marshfield Nelson 4 Talbot Wanderers 0

Nelson made hard work of beating their 2nd Division opponents despite dominating the game for long periods.
Marshfield took the lead after sixteen minutes when Tom Brown found space on the right to deliver a perfect cross for Gary Campbell to head home from close range.
After that Nelson created several openings with the best falling to Bobby Jenkins but he was unable to finish when in a good position. At the other end Scott Windle had to act smartly to turn away an effort from Simon Quilter.
In the second half the small vociferous crowd became more and more frustrated at Nelson not being able to wrap the game up and one of the highlights of this period was an impressive spell of "keep me uppy" by Dave Jenkins on the line. However all this changed on 67 minutes when Dan Watson floated in a corner and Gary Campbell rose to head home his second to effectively seal the game. Ten minutes later and Gary Campbell was given the chance to score his hat-trick after Bobby Jenkins was brought down in the area after a fine run down the left. He drilled a low shot into the corner of the net which was the moment in which the Nelson management team decided to make substitutions. Mike Lodge deciding he needed some young fresh legs strangely brought on Mike Phillpott together with Sammy Johnston and Adie Williams and it was the latter who created the fourth. He broke away down the right and crossed for Bobby Jenkins to finish with the easiest of chances. Talbot threatened little in the second half with their nearest opportunity coming from Chris Whitehorn who let fly from 25 yards but Scott Windle was equal to it turning the ball over the bar.

Sunday 15th January 2006 - Somerset Sunday Challenge Cup -  Quarter Final

Marshfield Nelson 1 Ring Of Bells 3

These two unbeaten sides clashed even before the kick off when a car containing players from the Bells team took a wrong turning in the Withymead Estate. They promptly reversed their car into an oncoming one containing Richard and Luke Lock, not a good start to the day! And things got worse for the Marshfield Nelson soon after the kick off. The game was just five minutes old when Nelson thought they had taken the lead after a deflected shot ended up in the Bells net but the goal was ruled out for an infringement which only the referee appeared to see!
Shortly after this setback Ross Andrews limped out of the game for the home side and was replaced by Ryan Nicholls. By this time Bells were finding some room down their right wing and it was from one of these attacks on twenty seven minutes in which Clinton Hartley put the visitors ahead, his delicate chip beat the advancing Scott Windle.
In the second half Nelson increased the tempo' but were unable to finish some fine build up play. With twenty minutes remaining, Bells scored the goal of the game when a cross from the left was smashed home on the volley by Jason Collier. It was now all or nothing for Marshfield and with twelve minutes left on the clock, Bobby Jenkins waltzed into the Bells area and crashed home a left foot shot into the top corner past Dean Evans. Two minutes later though the game went out of Nelson's reach when Damien Preece scored from close range to make the score 3-1.
Ring of Bells have now been drawn away to Kewstoke Lions, Weston Super Mare, what a pity we couldn't have had that fixture I reckon Chris Watson could have got two coach loads for a trip to the seaside.

Roper Rhodes 1 Marshfield Nelson Reserves 3

Nelson Reserves, without their influential greek player manager Ian "Stelios" Lanning, started the match brightly but fell behind to a cruelly deflected shot from Dan Bliss on fifteen minutes.
Roper Rhodes lead was short lived though with Nelson coming back to equalise five minutes later. Sammy Johnston collected a throw on the right and crossed to Jamie Lucas who beat two defenders before slotting the ball home. Ten minutes later Nelson were in front, a free kick on the area from Matt Bryant wasn't cleared and Sean Huggins was on hand to steer the ball home from close range.
After the break Nelson dominated but couldn't find the goal to make the result safe.
Nelson' best chance fell to Matt Bryant but his penalty was well saved. With five minutes remaining Nelson eventually scored a vital third goal, a corner on the right from Luke Boughey found Adie Williams and his cross was helped in at the far post by Roper Rhodes defender James McGlinchy.
Footnote.
After the match referee Paul Weeks sent his congratulations to the Nelson side saying it was the best performance from a young team he had seen for a long time! High praise indeed.
Apparently the average age of this Reserve side is about 18, that was until substitute Mike Phillpott came on to send it through the roof!

Sunday 5th February 2006  - Tom Morgan Cup Round 2

Marshfield Nelson 10 Keynsham Venturers 0

Nelson ran riot against their Division 2 opponents scoring six goals before the interval. Bobby Jenkins started the rout after eight minutes scoring at the near post before a pass from Ryan Nicholls set Gary Campbell free to steer in a second. Nelson's third came after seventeen minutes when Bobby Jenkins cross found Tom Brown who brought the ball down with one touch and shot into the top right hand corner of the net. It was the same combination ten minutes later that provided the home side's fourth although this was a far simpler finish. Bobby Jenkins was causing havoc on the left wing and his cross on 37 minutes was sliced home by defender Dave Pritchard. Two minutes before the interval Tom Brown completed his hat-trick smashing home a shot from twenty yards.
In the second half Nelson continued to dominate and it was no surprise when Tom Brown scored again on the hour mark after being released by Gary Campbell. A rare attack by the visitors provided Tom Brown's fifth goal, a long clearance by veteran substitute Mike Phillpott gave the striker the chance to chip the stranded Ian Paynter for Nelson' eighth. Ryan Nicholls was next to add his name to the score sheet, he exchanged passes with Luke Lock before steering the ball home at the near post.
Keynsham seldom ventured into the Nelson half but from one such excursion Mike Branton brought a superb save from the Nelson keeper. But as the seconds were running out substitute Sammy Johnston's precision pass found Jason Kidner on the right, he crossed, Campbell gambled and Nelson had ten!

Sunday 12th Feb 2006

Unity Sports 2 Marshfield Nelson 7

There was a first half goal fest at Unity where Nelson came back from a goal down to lead 5-2 at the interval.
The home side attacked from the start and went ahead after six minutes when Rayan Wilson's cross was superbly volleyed home by Dazell Young. Four minutes later and Marshfield were level when Ian McPherson's lob found it's way to Tom Brown who drilled in the equaliser. Five minutes later Ross Andrews gave Nelson the lead crashing home a cross from Tom Brown. But back came Unity with Dazell Young intercepting a back pass from Ryan Nicholls to make the score 2-2. With only twenty five minutes gone Nelson were in front again when Dan Watson converted a penalty after Ian McPherson was brought down. Just after the half hour mark Bobby Jenkins got on the score sheet for Nelson's fourth and with a pulsating first half coming to a close Tom Brown scored his second finishing off a cross from Luke Lock.
The second half was never going to live upto the first and Nelson were content to sit on their lead until Bobby Jenkins scored two late goals, the first a dazzling cross field run eventually rounding Pete Innes and stroking the ball into the empty net. Then minutes from the end Jenk's secured his hat-trick shooting home from close range after substitute Mike Phillpott's shot came back off a defender.

Sunday 26th February 2006

Kingsmead 0 Marshfield Nelson 4

Marshfield Nelson maintained their 1st Division title challenge with a 4-0 victory over a determined Kingsmead side.
The home side needing points at the other end of the table were immediately on the backfoot as Nelson squandered two early chances to take the lead. After this opportunities became a little more scarce with a resolute Kings defence holding firm until the break.
Manager Mike Lodge had plenty to say during the interval and it seemed to work when five minutes into the second half Bobby Jenkins broke free on the left and his cross was headed home by Gary Campbell. This goal seemed to encourage Marshfield and shortly afterwards Russell Lodge scuffed home a second from close range. With twenty minutes left Bobby Jenkins found the corner of the net following Tom Brown's cross and with time running out Russell Lodge bagged his second heading home a cross from Ross Andrews.

Sunday 5th March 2006 - Tom Morgan Cup Quarter Final

Marshfield Nelson 4 Lower Weston 2

Marshfield Nelson progressed into the semi-finals of the Tom Morgan Cup at the expense of their Division 2 visitors, Lower Weston. Nelson attacked from the off and forced a series of early corners which proved a problem for the Lower Weston defence. It was from a Ross Andrews corner after ten minutes that Nelson took the lead with Bobby Jenkins sending a looping header over Phil Tyler in the Weston goal. Two minutes later and Tyler was in action again turning a Bobby Jenkins shot around the post. But the danger was shortlived as resulting Ross Andrews corner again caused problems and Ryan Nicholls was on hand to push the ball home for the Nelson's second.

With the game barely fifteen minutes old Weston were back in the game when Charlie Irving made ground from the back exchanged passes with Tim Fewster and smashed the ball past Mattie Gray. Moments later the Nelson defence was all at sea and were fortunate not to concede an equaliser, the ball eventually being scrambled away for a corner.

On the half hour mark Nelson restored their two goal cushion when Luke Lock scored his first goal of the season. A Dan Watson corner on the left was half cleared and Lock picked his spot from 25 yards leaving Tyler helpless in the Weston goal. Nelson were now playing their best football and scored a fourth before the break when Ian McPherson exchanged passes with Gary Campbell and slammed in his first goal since September! The second half was an anti climax with both sides cancelling each other out but with five minutes remaining Lower Weston scored a consolation goal when Mike Naylor released Rhys Williams on the left and his cross shot found the far corner of the Nelson net.

Sunday 26th March 2006

Marshfield Nelson 6 Unity Sports 1

Nelson made the worst possible start in an attempt to make amends for last week's debacle by conceding from Unity's first attack. Daz Young found space on the left and steered a shot past the diving Scott Windle to stun Nelson.
Five minutes later though and Nelson were level, a cross from Ian McPherson from wide on the right eluded everyone and found it's way into the far corner of the visitor's net. Minutes later, Tom Brown gambled on a through ball and found enough space to shoot past the despairing Jamie Rankin to give Nelson the lead. The home side wer now dominating the game and it was no surprise when they scored a third although the scorer was a surprise. A Bobby Jenkins corner was delivered to the back post where Shane Andrews crashed home a header, his first Nelson goal since the last century.

Moments before half time Nelson scored their fourth, Luke Lock passed to Russell Lodge and his flick released Bobby Jenkins who cut in from the left and his cross shot found the corner of the Unity net.
Four minutes into the second half and the home side netted a fifth. A Ryan Nicholls throw in gave Shane Andrews the chance to put in a deep cross from the left which eventually found it's way to Gary Campbell who scored from close range. Minutes later and it was six when a corner from Bobby Jenkins found the head of Russell Lodge who made no mistake. Nelson could have added to their lead with the best chance falling to Ian McPherson who after dancing past several defenders fluffed his shot and Rankin was able to turn the ball away for a corner.

Sunday 2 April 2006

Moonshine Gladbach 1 Marshfield Nelson 2

Marshfield Nelson created a host of chances in the early stages of this match but failed to capitalise and paid the price when Moonshine took the lead after twenty minutes. Mark Goldsmith collected the ball on the right of the Nelson penalty area and his cross shot found the corner of the net.
Marshfield continued to attack but the Moons defence held firm until the interval with some last ditch defending and a touch of good fortune.
In the second half it was more of the same although the home side were guilty of missing a great opportunity when they blazed a penalty over the Nelson bar. This seemed to spur the visitors on even more and with twenty minutes remaining Nelson eventually equalised. Ross Andrews caused havoc when he waltzed into the Moons area and the ball was eventually helped over the line by a home defender. Five minutes later and Nelson were ahead when a cross found Emile Wratten on the right and he made no mistake at the far post. Gladbach were gutted at the finish but Nelson were glad to be back with three points

Sunday 9th April 2006  - Odd Down Playing Fields

New Burnt House 2 Marshfield Nelson 2

Marshfield Nelson opened the brighter of the two teams and took the lead on ten minutes through Gary Campbell.
Dan Watson launched a long throw into the Burnt House area where Russell Lodge managed to head the ball on to Gary Campbell who headed home at the far post.
Nelson were unfortunate to be denied a second when another Dan Watson throw was headed home by Russell Lodge however after consulting his assistant the referee disallowed the goal to the astonishment of the Nelson players and supporters.
But Nelson were to score a second when Russell Lodge stabbed the ball home from close range but immediately after scoring the striker limped out of the game with a knee injury.
After the interval New Burnt House pressed forward and pulled a goal back midway through the half when Lee Burns scored.
Shortly afterwards there was another contoversial decision when Bobby Jenkins broke clear and appeared to be brought down in the area but the referee waved away Nelson's penalty appeals and then showed a red card to Ross Andrews for dissent.
Meanwhile Bobby Jenkins was still giving the New Burnt House defence cause for concern going close on two occasions but after his substitution with ten minutes left the home side scrambled an equaliser.

Tuesday 18th April 2006

Marshfield Nelson 6 Moonshine Gladbach 3

Moonshine rocked the Nelson with two super strikes after only twenty minutes gone! Firstly, Shane Sullivan picked up a loose ball thirty yards out and smacked a superb dipping volley over the back pedalling Ian Lanning. Then for good measure and to show it wasn't a fluke he repeated the feat five minutes later.
But the Nellie were back in the game on the half hour mark when Bobby Jenkins latched onto a Jason Kidner cross and buried the ball into the far corner of the net. An injury forced Moonshine to reshuffle before the interval and they played the remainder of the game with ten men having no substitute. Meanwhile Jenkins was stretching the Moons defence and he grabbed an equaliser before the interval.
Early in the second half the home side took the lead for the first time when Gary Campbell stroked home a penalty but the lead was shortlived when Moonshine equalised when Simon Gould cracked home another beauty over the still back pedalling Ian Lanning.
