Bill Holbrook, MFC club chairman of three years standing (prior to this season) has decided to stand down from the club committee. Bill bravely stepped into the Chairman's role at the start of the 2004-2005 season at a difficult time following the retirement of Pat Conway. He immediately stamped his authority on the committee and worked tirelessly behind the scenes, taking minutes, selling programmes, getting sponsors, oiling the publicity machine and organising fund raising events, as the team on the pitch grew from strength to strength. Bill's "unfinished business" remark became a battle cry for the boys as they pursued the championship last season and our picture shows Bill proudly holding the Stan Milsom Cup following the cup final triumph last May. Bill will continue to chase the Withymead floodlights dream on our behalf and we know will be successful. We wish Bill all the best for the future and thank him for all his hard work which unquestionably has been key in our clubs' continuing success. Thanks Bill
It is with regret that we have to announce that the MFC reserve team which has been running for the last two seasons has been folded. No one has come forward and offered to manage the side and the committee were not prepared to start the season and then potentially have to withdraw from the league during the season. It is hoped that it will be restarted at some time in the near future. Anyone interested in running a team should contact any member of the committee.
Following Mike Lodge's decision to stand down as manager the committee have appointed Mike's assistant last season, Ken Tierney as first team boss Mike Phillpott is the new Club Chairman after Bill Holbrook decided to stand down to concentrate on the Withymead Floodlights project. Peter Williams has taken on the Treasurer's role after Peter Flower stood down this summer.
Marshfield Nelson FC thanks the players of the Bristol City legends, Geoff Twentyman our match referee, all those who donated auction items, bought raffle tickets and helped on the day. Thanks for making a special day for a special man.
Gary Campbell Memorial Match Sunday 22nd July 2007 at the Withymead Kick off 1pm
NELSON v BRISTOL CITY LEGENDS
The memorial match between Marshfield Nelson and a Bristol City XI is to be held on July 22nd 2007.
The showpiece game is in memory of former Robins and Nelson player Gary Campbell who died last June, and will raise money for
Cancer Research UK. Past and present City players are due to make up the visiting team at the Withymead. Entry is free
but a raffle and auction will be held with signed football and rugby shirts. The auction items donated so far are listed below.
Bath Rugby will compete in a half time penalty shootout. It is hoped that Pompey assistant boss Joe Jordan, who brought Gary to Ashton Gate when he was boss there in the mid 90s, will be one of the stars attending. Gary moved to the Robins from Celtic but had his professional career cut short by injury. He played for the Nelson before his sad death last year, aged 33. See News. Archive page. Any donations can be made to Shane Andrews, c/o 13 Withymead Road, Marshfield,SN14 8PA.
Congratulations to Pete Flower on winning the Bath and District Sunday League Linesman of the Year Award for
2006-2007. The award is voted for by the League Referees and is the second season in succession that Pete has won the trophy.
Our picture shows a joyous Pete celebrating in his usual style!!!
At the Club's recent AGM it was agreed that with effect from the start of the new 2007-2008 season the club will
(with the full blessing of Dan at the Nelson) change it's name to Marshfield Football Club. The principle reason for this is
the club's desire to grow and improve football facilities in the village. To embrace the youth teams within it's structure and
to therefore aid income from grants etc. it was, unfortunately not possible to have a name which has an association with a pub.
In time this site will change its name also....watch this space
Also at the AGM, Pete Williams, Ben White, Mark Hodder and Dan Aubrey were elected on to the club committee -welcome aboard lads!!!
Tom Morgan Cup Semi Final The Bath & District League Management Council has ordered the Nelson v Manor Park Rangers semi to be replayed - The match will take place at Twerton Park on Wed 9th May kick off 7.30pm. More on this later......
The Nelson Committee have announced that they hope to hold a Gary Campbell memorial match in July 2007 (date to be confirmed) between Marshfield Nelson FC and a “Bristol City” team which is being put together by Tony Cook, one of Gary’s closest friends. Tony and Gary were young pros at Ashton Gate together and Tony hopes to persuade many of the players who knew Gary at that time to come down for the game. We aim to hold an auction of donations following the game and are asking the “football family” to offer any suitable items that will help us raise as much money for CLIC as we can. Tony, Mike Phillpott and Shane Andrews are our organising committee. If you can help or have any ideas to help make the occasion the great success we all want it to be please contact them. More information to follow.....

After his playing career. Dave took up refereeing and officiated at many games at the Withymead. His funeral service will be held at Westerleigh Crematorium on Friday 2 March, 12.30. We are sad to announce that Ian Lanning has left his role of Reserve Team Manager. Ian re-established the Nelson’s reserve team at the start of the 2005-2006 season and lead a team of promising youngsters and a few old heads to promotion from Division Six in his first season at the helm. The legacy of Ian’s brief period in charge of the Reserves will be some good young players playing in the Nelson first team for many years to come. We send Ian our thanks and best wishes for the future. The Reserve team will now be looked after by Guy Barker Hall, assisted by John McLeary. Good luck lads!
Marshfield Nelson have been drawn to play 2nd Division Southdown Rangers in the semi finals of the Stan Milsom Cup. The match will be played at Lansdown Playing Fields next Sunday, 17th December, kick off 10.15. Although Southdown's League form has been somewhat mixed, their Cup performances have been 100% and they shouldn't be under estimated as 1st Division Larkhall Athletic Sunday will testify! Larkhall crashed out at home to the Rangers in the Quarter Finals courtesy of a solitary Pete Collins goal.
In the other semi-final, 2nd Division Bear Flat will play 1st Division GT Sports, this match will be played today,10th December. Both of these sides came through gruelling quarter final ties, both decided on penalty shoot-outs, Bear Flat beat Jazz Sports and GT disposed of Livingstone Villa. So if you want to get away from writing Christmas cards and wrapping presents on Sunday the 17th, please come up to Lansdown and cheer on the Nellie, I'm sure the lads will appreciate the support!
After trips to play opposition from the Bridgewater and Taunton leagues in the Somerset Cup, Nelson now have a match away to Great Western FC from the Yeovil league. Great Western play in the village of Nether Compton between Yeovil and Sherborne although I’m informed the Great Western pub is in Yeovil and we will be most welcome there after the match! A coach is taking players and supporters to the match so if you are interested in travelling please contact committee members for times and cost.

Horses For Courses The Football Club race night held at the Crown on Friday 20th October was a great success
raising over £500 for the club. The evening was under threat when a mystery betting syndicate cleaned up on the third and fourth
races but when their jockey, the lovely Sharon, was poached for the PJ Construction sponsored “Ground Workers Gelding Handicap”
parity resumed. Anyway a huge vote of thanks to everyone who attended but special thanks must go to Guy Barker Hall for
organising the event, The Crown for hosting the event, our Race Sponsors, our trusty tote operators, Margaret and Thelma and
last but not least, the top man, Auctioneer and Race Scrutineer, Mr Nick Sweet.
PJ Construction Kit Sponsor MNFC 1st Team 2006-2007.The Club wishes to thank P J Construction for supplying
it's new first team kit for the coming season. P J Construction have always been staunch supporters of the club and contribute
to it's success in many other ways. In a press release P J Construction Chief Executive Paul Andrews stated:"Marshfield Nelson is a superbly run club, with a strong vibrant committee and fantastic management team. They do a wonderful
job providing football for players of all ages and abilities in this village. I am only to pleased to lend what support I can"
I’m sure all of our supporters and followers of this club are aware by now of the tragic death of Gary Campbell on the
27th June 2006 at the age of 33. Gary was a first team regular last season and a very popular member of our club. He will be
sorely missed not only because he was a quality footballer but a “quality” man as well. Our condolences go to Gary’s family
and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time. When Rich Oldfield rang me last October and said that he had an ex Bristol
City pro and Celtic junior living next door, who was keen in getting involved with the Club, I must admit I was not overly
excited. I was expecting to find a middle aged, rotund has been, with bad knees and ankles who was trying to recapture his youth!!!
My view changed instantly on my first meeting with Gary. He was fit, had been training for the Bath half marathon and was an instantly likeable character. At our first meeting to sign him on, we talked easily about his football background, about football in general, families and interests and to my great joy, we discovered we had a mutual love of bands and guitars.
He integrated instantly into the Club, christening everyone either “big man or wee man” depending on their height,
in that endearing, slightly softened Glaswegian accent. There was no “the big I am” with Gary. He advised and encouraged the young players and gained admiration and respect from all because of what he did on the pitch and said in the dressing room.
Those of you who attended Gary’s funeral could not fail to be moved by it and can feel nothing but enormous sympathy for Gary’s brave wife Emma and his immediate family and friends who spoke so movingly and eloquently about him. There were close to twenty players and officials from the club who attended to pay our respects. That is an honest reflection of Gary’s popularity.
I knew Gary personally only for about nine months and liked him tremendously. He was witty, outgoing, irreverent, totally honest and reliable, and great company. I am deeply saddened, like all of us, that I will not be able to get to know him better.
God bless you Gary, you will be missed by us all, rest in peace.
It is with deep sadness that we have to announce that Gary Campbell has passed away, aged 33. Gary was a first team regular and a very popular member of this Club. He played as a junior in Glasgow with Celtic and was a professional with Bristol City for a couple seasons when in his late teens. He will be sorely missed, not only as a quality footballer but a quality man as well. Our condolences go to Gary's family an our thoughts are with them at this difficult time. The funeral will take at Marshfield Parish Church on Friday 14th July 2006 at 10.45am.
LINESMAN OF THE YEAR-AT THE BATH & DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE AGM PETE FLOWER WAS AWARDED THE SUNDAY DIVISIONS LINESMAN OF THE
YEAR AWARD. WE MAY NOW SEE PETE GIVE ASSISTANCE TO GRAHAM POLL!!!
Sadly, we have to report the passing of one of Marshfield Nelson’s founding fathers, sponsor and committee member, Geoff Sheppard,“Shep” to his friends. He was a key influence in this Club’s affairs when it was reformed in 1999 and was a well known figure
in the community for many years previously where he always displayed a keen interest in local football. At his funeral early this
month there was a huge attendance where his family were gratified to see players and officials wearing their Marshfield Nelson
FC ties as a mark of respect for one of the Club’s most ardent supporters. Later this year we plan a permanent memorial by way
of a plaque at the Withymead. In addition, his wife Margaret is kindly donating a trophy in his memory that will be presented
annually. Our sincere condolences go to Margaret and all the family. He is much missed on the line, complete with familiar
baseball cap, come rain come shine. Our picture shows Margaret Sheppard unveiling Geoff's plaque at the Withymead assisted by Bill Holbrook and Pat Conway.
