Marshfield were indebted to keeper Julian Shipp who time and again saved the visitors with a string of excellent saves. Marshfield actually made the perfect start scoring after only eight minutes when Mattie Windle headed home Russell Lodge’s free kick from wide on the right. A similarly positioned free kick minutes later saw Lodge’s free kick hit the bar and bounce down onto the goal line before being cleared. Meanwhile at the other end Shipp’s heroics were keeping Marsh’ ahead but Odd Down’s pressure eventually yielded an equaliser when Gary Jefferies smashed home a penalty after Andy Miles was adjudged to have brought down Matt Harding.
Five minutes after the break, Marshfield were reduced to ten men when Ben Leslie was sent off for two bookable offences but instead of buckling, the man disadvantage seemed to galvanise Marshfield and they regained the lead midway through the second half. Davy Jenkins managed to find enough space on the right and his cross was gleefully turned past Matt Lapham by Andy Jefferies. There were still some hairy moments for Marshfield to survive but survive they did and the points were secured with what must be described as a superb defensive display.
